M presents a solo exhibition by Alexis Gautier
L’Heure de la Soupe
In his artistic practice, Alexis Gautier often opts for a collective approach. Based on an interest in the ways in which people or things are connected, he creates an oeuvre with changing main characters. At M Leuven, Alexis Gautier explores the boundaries and ambiguities between fact and fiction, freedom and letting go of total control over his own work. The exhibition space could be viewed as a film-set presenting a collection of new works born from a collective fiction.
"For M, the focus is very much on supporting artists in the development of their practice. Alexis Gautier previously showed his work in the group exhibition 'The Constant Glitch', and now M is giving him the opportunity to present a solo exhibition," Denise Vandevoort, alderman for culture and chairwoman of the board of M, explains.
Coauthors
Alexis Gautier's creative process is in part accidental, with ideas and objects emerging from the collaboration of several co-authors, who all become protagonists in the exhibition.
Eva Wittocx, curator of Contemporary Art at M, adds: "Alexis Gautier brings a very large group of newly produced works, including custom-made work for the M space and a large sculpture on the roof terrace. For this exhibition, he collaborated with other artists, artisans, individuals who also bear the name Alexis Gautier, and M’s public facilitators."
In parallel to the exhibition, M, CIAP Genk and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp will publish a new book, designed by Nico Dockx.
The exhibition is a collaboration with contemporary art platform CIAP Genk and is made possible with the support of the French Embassy in Brussels (within the framework of Extra) and machine manufacturer LVD Group.
