Art as a breathing space for Ukrainian children

M Leuven organises workshops for the Ukrainian 'Pinchuk Art Center' in collaboration with the Antwerp M KHA, as support for the ‘Ukrainians for Ukrainians' project. The first workshop starts on 7th of  May and registration is free.

‘Ukrainians for Ukrainians’

Denise Vandevoort, alderman for culture and chair of the board of M, explains: "M has for years been committed to work on mental resilience. This project is a wonderful initiative and fits in perfectly with this. In this way, art and culture are combined with humanitarian efforts. M Leuven is therefore happy to support this project."

The 'Ukrainians for Ukrainians' project is a cooperation between the Ukrainian contemporary art centre 'Pinchuk Art Center' and M KHA, Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp. As part of this project, educational workshops will be held in M Leuven on every Saturday in May. The workshops are intended for Ukrainian families and focus on creative development of children, a sense of unity and providing mutual support. With help, they will use shoe boxes to make houses that symbolise a safe haven.

Sofie Vermeiren, Head of public affairs, adds: "M has experience with this kind of project. In the past, we have for example come up with programmes around dementia. This project builds on the themes around mental resilience which is an important pillar for M. The educational workshops will be given for and by Ukrainians.  It is intended to support families in Belgium who have had to flee their homes. In this way, we as a museum can do our bit."

Practical

The workshops will take place in the M studio on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of May. The first workshop starts at 11am and the second one at 2pm. Groups participating in the workshops can visit the museum free of charge. Registration is also free and can be done online via this link.
