Advertising, pop and cyber culture translated into visual art
M welcomes a new resident

This week, Niels Poiz starts a four-month residency at the M studio in Cas-co at the invitation of M Leuven. M's residency offers emerging artists the opportunity to focus on their art in the best conditions and with expert guidance. Niels Poiz (born 1991 in Torhout) is a visual artist with an artistic practice that circles around language, narration and communication. Niels Poiz's work deals with current socio-political, cultural, identity and gender issues.
M residence
"As a museum, M leads in discovering and supporting emerging talent. Thanks to their cooperation with vzw Cas-co, selected artists are given space to experiment and create new work. The focus is on the visual arts and by extension on performance," Denise Vandevoort, alderwoman for culture and chairwoman of the M board, says with a smile.
Laure Vanrijckeghem, M-residence coordinator, explains further: "A residency normally lasts around four months and proceeds in several stages. As part of this process, M guides the artists in drawing up a project plan. We then, together with the artist, look at how we can best support them in their creative process and use our network to help the artist move forward."
Niels Poiz is no stranger to M and in 2015 he was selected for 'Open M', the biennial group exhibition of regional artists.
'Language is power'
During his M residency, Poiz will explore different media such as posters, videos, performances, sculptures and publications. He translates his personal search into physical space using fragments from advertising, pop culture and cyber culture. Coming-of-age themes, the study of communication strategies and sociology form a common thread throughout his oeuvre.
"I am really looking forward to my residency, it will help me focus on new work in peace. I would also like to use this time to experiment with different media and materials, "says the new M resident Niels Poiz.
