A new meeting place for Leuven
M opens new museum shop and coffee bar

It was a while ago now but M Leuven is once again opening a museum café with a book shop, in collaboration with a Leuven icon. As of Saturday 2 July, 'Barbóék in M' will open its doors. It is the second branch of Barbóék but it will not be an exact copy. The selection in M Leuven consists of art books, special editions...and artistic souvenirs.
"Barbóék fits in very well with the vision M Leuven had in mind for the new shop and café. When you enter Barbóék, you’re in a cosy atmosphere surrounded by books. ‘Barbóék in M' will be a pleasant meeting place where you can just walk in, even if you are not visiting the museum. But we certainly recommend it," Denise Vandevoort, alderwoman for culture and chairwoman of the M board, says with a smile.
"With 'Barbóék in M' we aim for something slightly different", says Lies, manager at Barbóék. "We want to create a warm, approachable place where you can have a coffee and cake or soup and bread surrounded by books. Where people can find a quality range of art and photo books, beautiful editions of artists exhibiting in M, catalogues of current exhibitions and artistic presents. In short, a bookshop with an offer that is not available anywhere else in Leuven."
Lies Van Kerckhove, interior designer and manager of Fragmenture, adds: "My design is a homely atmosphere in the austere architectural space of the museum using basic colours found in M's collection presentations. These colours are repeated throughout the interior. All of the interior is also tailor-made."
Celebratory opening
'Barbóék in M' will festively open its doors on 2 and 3 July as part of the start of the Summer of M.
The Summer of M is an extensive summer programme that runs from 2 July to 28 August in the garden and halls of M. Entry to M is free every Thursday evening and there is an afterwork in the ZoMerbar on the terrace from 5 pm and free live performances by INUIT from 8 pm. Every weekend, with a break during M-IDZOMER from 28 to 31 July, children - and adults - are welcome to the Museum Play Street. That is a free offer for people with children that includes a climbing wall, a barefoot path and life-size toys. Just drop in whenever you want: Every Saturday between 2 and 5 pm, there are additional creative activities on the Museum Play Street. On 2 July, the programme will start with 'Acrobatic touring and soap bubbles'. M will close the summer with a great final party on 27 August. Discover everything on mleuven.be/summer-of-m
